Water Issues in Region 10
EPA Region 10's Office of Water's mission is to restore, maintain, and enhance the overall quality of the Region's water resources in order to protect the health and diversity of the environment for present and future generations by protecting diverse ecosystems and ensure healthy watersheds; safeguarding human health through vigorous protection of ground and surface waters and drinking water sources; preventing and minimizing the discharge of pollutants to land, air, and water; and promoting stewardship for the Region's waters through education and public involvement. |

What's New
EPA proposes two NPDES permits for municipal storm sewer systems to discharge into Chena River and other nearby waters in the greater Fairbanks, Alaska, area. Public comment on both permits will be accepted through December 2, 2004.
EPA is extending the public comment period on the draft NPDES permit for the US Coast Guard Integrated Support Command Kodiak, discharging to St. Paul Harbor on Kodiak Island near Kodiak, Alaska. The extended public comment period is 09/17/04--11/02/04.
EPA approved Washington Department of Ecology's submittal of fecal coliform bacteria TMDL for the Issaquah Creek Basin on October 1, 2004.
EPA invites public comments on the draft Underground Injection Control (UIC) permit and associated aquifer exemptionfor BP Exploration (Alaska) to construct and operate of one Class I non-hazardous industrial waste injection well at the Milne Point Unit about 10 miles northwest of the main Prudhoe Bay field complex. Comments are due by November 1, 2004. EPA will issue no separate public notice and may finalize the permit as drafted if no substantive comments are received by the close of the public comment period.

EPA approved Idaho and Oregon Department of Environmental Quality's submittal of Phosphorus, Dissolved Oxygen, Temperature, Sediment, Pesticide and Total Dissolved Gas TMDLs for the Snake River - Hells Canyon as described in EPA's press release.
The Snake River-Hells Canyon TMDL can be found on both State's websites at Oregon DEQ's website or Idaho DEQ's website.
EPA has issued NPDES permits for Ketchikan Gateway Borough Ward Cove Wastewater Treatment Plant and for Ketchikan Pulp Company Ward Cove Landfill; the permits are effective 10/01/04 --09/30/09.
