President Bush to Nominate Four Individuals to Serve in his Administration

President George W. Bush today announced his intention to nominate four individuals to serve in his administration.

The President intends to nominate John Malcolm Ordway to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of Armenia. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, he has served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Moscow since 1999, and served as political officer in Moscow from 1996 to 1999. Ordway was assigned to the U.S. Mission to NATO from 1993 to 1996 and has twice worked on detail to the National Security Council. He worked at the Department of State as Deputy Director of the Office of Soviet Affairs and Deputy Director of the Office of Southern African Affairs. Originally from California, he is a graduate of Stanford University and received his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings School of Law.

The President intends to nominate Brian E. Carlson to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of Latvia. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, he has served as Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs since 2000. He was previously Director of Public Diplomacy in the State Department’s Bureau of European Affairs and held the post of Public Affairs Officer in Spain from 1994 to 1998. From 1991to 1993, he was Director of European Affairs at the United States Information Agency. His earlier overseas assignments include service as Deputy Public Affairs Officer in London, Public Affairs Officer in Oslo and Sofia and Assistant Information Officer in Belgrade and Caracas. Carlson is a graduate of Vanderbilt University.

The President intends to nominate Marion Blakey to be a Member of the National Transportation Safety Board for the remainder of a five year term expiring December 31, 2005, and upon confirmation will be designated Chairman. She is Principal of Blakey and Associates, a business development, marketing and public affairs consulting firm, and served as Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from 1992 to 1993. Blakey was Assistant Secretary of Transportation for Public Affairs from 1990 to 1992, and Director of Public Affairs at the Department of Commerce from 1989 to 1990. She served in the White House from 1987 to 1989, and from 1970 to 1984, she held various positions at the National Endowment for the Humanities. A native of Tupelo, Mississippi, she is a graduate of the College of William and Mary.

The President intends to nominate John Arthur Hammerschmidt to be a Member of the National Transportation Safety Board for the remainder of a five-year term expiring December 31, 2002. He has served as a Member of the National Transportation Safety Board since 1991, and from 1985 to 1991, he was a Special Assistant to the Board Chairman. A native of Harrison, Arkansas, he is a graduate of Dartmouth University.
