After several years of coaching from OSHA’s Consultation program and a
desire to reach the maximum recognition level for their safety agenda, Pollak
Industries became a SHARP site in May 2003. Located in Pensacola, Florida,
Pollak manufactures plant sleeves, survey stakes, and several concrete products.
With a total of 128 employees, Pollak reports only 2 injuries/illnesses, a Total
Case Incidence Rate (TCIR) rate of 3.8, and a Days Away, Restricted, Transfer
(DART) rate of 0.0 after its first year in the SHARP program. These rates are
especially impressive because Pollak’s workforce includes persons with
developmental disabilities.
The safety and health culture at Pollak is strong and is faithfully
communicated to both employees and customers alike. "The company is an ideal
example in the execution of management commitment and employee participation,"
says one of Pollak’s own. In addition to its philosophical dedication to safety
and health, Pollak works hard to secure buy-in from all staff for its safety and
health program; has established a highly respected safety committee – on which
employees are honored to serve; is dedicated to hazard analysis –emphasizing
hazard prevention and control; and makes safety and health training available to
all employees. At Pollak, safety adds value on a daily basis, resulting in
innovative accident prevention, employee confidence, and overall success for the
triple bottom line.
