Learn How to Read and Use Flood Maps

Washington, DC, December 29, 2000 -- Since the 1970's FEMA has been creating, updating and storing flood hazard maps for communities participating in the National Flood Insurance Program. Flood Insurance Rate Maps or FIRMs are the primary tool for state and local governments to mitigate the effects of flooding in participating communities.

An online tutorial has been developed that shows the various types of flood maps, describes the elements and symbols used on the maps and explains how to read and use the maps.

Using this tutorial in conjunction with the actual flood maps will help in deciding if the potential flood risk for a particular property should be insured against flood loss.
