EPA Region 10 Wellhead Protection
The Wellhead Protection (WHP) Program is designed to prevent the contamination of ground water supplying public drinking water wells. Although state-level programs are mandated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, the program relies in large part on local efforts to be effective. This is because communities have the primary access to information on potential contamination sources and can implement locally-based measures ranging from land use controls to public education in order to manage potential sources within wellhead protection areas. EPA recommends five steps that communities can take to implement wellhead protection:
- Form a community planning team
- Define the land area around the well to be protected
- Identify potential sources of contamination within the area
- Develop and implement a management plan to protect the area
- Plan for emergencies and future water supply needs.
For additional information you may view or download and print the short (18 page) EPA brochure, "Protecting Groundwater Supplies Through Wellhead Protection," by clicking an option below. (The "print" version's pages are not numerically arranged because it's intended to be printed two-sided. See this note if you have questions about the differences between these versions and/or about printing. Or if you need the Adobe Acrobat Reader.)
