Marine Mammals and Seabirds

The Pacific OCS Region has supported the collection of large amounts of information on the marine mammals and seabirds that live along the west coast of the United States.

Currently, Pacific OCS Region biologists are conducting studies of seabird and shorebird populations in parts of Southern California.

Threatened and endangered species constitute a special concern to MMS in its management of the development of the oil and gas resources of the Federal outer continental shelf. Brief summaries of the status of threatened pinnipeds off the southern California coast, as well as of endangered whales found along the California coast have been produced by our scientists.
