Bookbinder

Salary: $35,089 to $63,835
Location:Washington, DC metropolitan area

Imaging and Publishing Support is a working capital organization within Global Support, providing traditional printing and multimedia publications to support the CIA's intelligence production and dissemination mission. Bindery Finishing is located within the Printing Services Center and is the final process in the production of the majority of IPS hard-copy publications. It receives hard-copy printed materials from the Press department that are assembled into finished products, such as books, pamphlets, magazines, foldouts, etc. Incumbent is a member of a team of bookbinders responsible for assembling the majority of IPS-produced hard-copy publications, and is responsible for all steps in the assembling process, including cutting, folding, collating, punching, tabbing, padding and inkjet operations.


Minimum requirements include a high school diploma or GED, and certification as an apprentice or equivalent experience. The ability to independently operate and maintain equipment used in core bindery processes (cutting, collating, folding), and the desire and ability to learn how to operate and maintain equipment used in non-core bindery processes are also needed, along with a mechanical aptitude that includes the ability to identify and properly use tools, and an understanding of the differences between metric, decimal and American standard (SAE) tools and tooling. You must also have working knowledge of PSI and data input requirements; a willingness to work shift work, overtime and to be on call; and the ability to lift up to 45 lbs. Knowledge of MBO folding equipment, Polar cutters, Mueller Saddle stitch equipment, Sterling collators and the Wholenberg 3-knife trimmer, Scott tab machine and Inkjet system, and Panda Perfect binder is desired.
