CIDS drilling an exploratory well in the Beaufort SeaOffshore drilling in the Alaska OCS Region began in 1975 with the first deep stratigraphic test well in the Gulf of Alaska.  Since then nearly 100 wells have been drilled across seven planning areas.

Most of these wells did not find oil or gas in commercial quantities, but the search goes on. Industry is focusing their current efforts toward the Beaufort Sea where other commercial production has been found.

This page links historical information about past drilling activity in the Region.  For current activity, in the Region click here.
