Increasing atmospheric concentrations of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) have raised concerns about the impact of human activities on Earth's climate. The Orbiting Carbon Observatory will provide the first space-based observations of CO2 with the precision and spatial and temporal resolution needed to characterize production and loss rates of this gas. These measurements will revolutionize our understanding of the processes regulating atmospheric CO2, enabling more reliable forecasts of climate change.
