9/11 Commission Records
The 9/11 Commission, which closed on August 21, 2004, has transferred legal custody of
its records to the National Archives. In accordance with the Federal Records Act,
the Commission has established a general restriction from public access on
these records until 2009. Because the Commission was part of the legislative branch,
its records are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
However, the Commission's publicly released records are available on the
Commission's web site, which has been frozen, is in NARA's custody, and remains available to the public.
Records of Concern
In light of the terrorist events of September 11, we are re-evaluating access to some previously open archival materials, and reinforcing established practices on screening materials not yet open for research. See our factsheet on Access to Archival Materials in the Context of Concern about Terrorism.
