Meetings are held approximately twice a year as called by the Agency's Senior Science Advisor, Office of the Commissioner, FDA.
Consists of a core of 12 members including the Chair selected by the Commissioner of Food and Drugs for overlapping terms of four years. Members are selected from among authorities in the fields of chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, clinical research, and other scientific disciplines. (Roster)
Provides advice primarily to the Associate Commissioner for Science and Health and, as needed, to the Commissioner and other appropriate officials on specific complex and technical issues as well as emerging issues within the scientific community in industry and academia. Established by the Commissioner of Food and Drugs on June 26, 1992, (21 USC 321, 341, 342, 343, 343-1, 344, 345, 346, 348, 349, 350, 350a, 351, 352, 353f, 355, 360b, 360c-j, 371, 375, 376, 378, 379e, 381, 393, 394; 42 USC 217a, 241, 242, 242a, 262 264; PL 92 463 as amended (5 USC App. 2)); and terminating June 26, 2000, unless formally determined by the Commissioner of Food and Drugs or designee that its renewal is in the public interest.
