NCHS and the Bureau of the Census
collaborated to provide NCHS data sets in the the Census'
DataFerrett system.
DataFerrett is a unique
data mining and extraction tool. It allows you to
select a databasket full of variables, and recode
those variables as needed, and then develop and
customize tables and charts.
DataFerrett helps you locate and retrieve the data you need across the
Internet to your desktop or system, regardless of where the data resides.
DataFerrett
allows users to:
Create crosstabs
Create frequencies Create data in the form in
which you need it (ASCII, SAS, SPSS, Excel/Access
files) Move seamlessly between
query, analysis, and visualization of data, and Share and
manage data easier.
AccessingDataFerrett
DataFerrett runs from the application icon installed on your desktop.
Once you download
and installDataFerrett,
you will be asked to sign in using your e-mail address. Once
the e-mail address has been entered, choose the
appropriate button, and a listing of the available datasets appears. You can
then select the files you want to use and proceed using DataFerret.
Guidelines:
You are encouraged to read analytical guidelines, the NCHS Data Use Restrictions, and
other documentation regarding using each data set and to visit the NCHS Web site areas for
each survey for additional information regarding each data set. Pay particular
attention to the weighting requirements of each data set. For some files,
recommended weights have been selected; for others, you can choose weights from the list
of variables.
