Iowa Seasonal Markers Fall-Winter Study

Participating schools will be expected to contact Marcy so that she can add their school to project maps and graphs. Each class should have a classroom discussion on how we know when seasons change and what a seasonal marker is (see new phenology protocols pdf available on the GLOBE website). Students should make predictions about the date each of the ten seasonal markers will be observed and record these predictions. Students can also predict if seasonal change will come to all of Iowa at the same time or gradually and what pattern the changes might take. Each school will then keep a record of the date the class first observes each of the ten selected seasonal markers and how students made the observation (did they see frost on the ground in the morning or hear a weather report of first frost). The class will submit its reports to GLOBE Iowa via email (iowawet@iscssun.uni.edu). Marcy and Betsy will collect all the data from all participating schools and make it available in maps and graphs. Lastly, each school can review their predictions and the actual seasonal marker pattern. They can answer the following questions: What was the pattern of seasonal change from fall to winter in Iowa? Did all seasonal markers follow the same pattern? Did the class predict the correct pattern of seasonal change? Does the class think that 2002 Fall to Winter was a typical year? How can they find out? Does the class have new questions about how the seasons change? What would the class predict as a spring to summer seasonal change pattern. All information on this project will be reported to GLOBE though this website and on the GLOBE Iowa website: www.uni.edu/~iowawet . Students will collect the date and source of observations for the following seasonal markers: 1. First Snow Fall 2. First Snow Fall that sticks on the ground for more than an hour. 3. First Frost. 4. First low Temperature below 0 degrees C. 5. First High Temperature below 10 degrees C. 6. First leaves have fallen on ground. 7. All the deciduous trees in school yard have lost most leaves. 8. Santa Claus's first day at the local mall. 9. First observation of birds migrating south (list bird type if possible). 10. Pick another class in your school. Record the first day that over 1/2 of THAT class wears mittens to school.
