Radio Unica is a national Hispanic radio network of more than 40 stations reaching an estimated 80% of the U.S. Hispanic population. Radio Unica recently joined HHS and ABC Radio Networks to support 2 HHS campaigns, Closing the Health Gap and Take A Loved One to the Doctor Day. Closing the Health Gap is designed to increase awareness of health disparities, ignite community action and increase access to health care. The focus of Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day is to encourage individuals to take charge of their health by visiting a health professional (a doctor, a nurse, a nurse practitioner, or another health provider), making an appointment for a visit, attending a health event in the community, or helping a friend, neighbor, or family member do the same.
In support of these campaigns, HHS and Radio Unica will present prevention and action messages to Hispanic communities focused on women's health issues, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke, HIV/AIDS, infant mortality and SIDS, immunizations, and organ donation. This joint effort between HHS and Radio Unica will be titled, Closing the Health Gap - Your Passport to Good Health.
HHS health messages will play over the Radio Unica network during the coming year. The broadcast spots will promote Take A Loved One to the Doctor Day (September 16, 2003) and will feature health messages from the Office on Women's Health, Office of Minority Health, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Food and Drug Administration, Health Resources and Services Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's VERB campaign, Office of HIV/AIDS Policy, and National Institutes of Health.
HHS will also be a major sponsor and participant in 12 health fairs that will be conducted by Radio Unica in 11 cities between August and November. Eleven of the fairs will be conducted at local Wal-Mart stores. The all-day Sunday fairs will feature health information from HHS agencies and health screenings organized by local providers. Radio Unica will air one-hour live roundtable discussions with health experts on the Saturday preceding and following each event.
