Percent Distribution of AIDS Cases in Female Adults and Adolescents, by Exposure Category and Race/Ethnicity Cumulative through 2002 - United States

Of all women and adolescent girls with AIDS, 43% were exposed to HIV infection through injection drug use (IDU) and 53% through heterosexual contact with an injection drug user, a bisexual male, a male with hemophilia, a transfusion recipient with HIV infection, or an HIV-infected person. These proportions were similar for white, black, Hispanic, and American. 

Indian/Alaska Native women. Among Asian/Pacific Islander women, compared with other racial/ethnic groups, a higher proportion were exposed through heterosexual contact (65%), and fewer through injection drug use (20%).

The data have been adjusted for reporting delays.
