The Army Chaplaincy

Professional Bulletin of the Unit Ministry Team

General Information.  The Army Chaplaincy is, first and foremost, a professional bulletin published by the Army Chief of Chaplains to provide information for the support and strengthening of chaplains and chaplain assistants for their religious support mission to soldiers and family members. The Army Chaplaincy is available in hardcopy and on the Chaplain School's homepage

Our goal is to provide the reader with good, professionally written articles that are useful to the profession of arms, in general, and to the Army Chaplaincy and unit ministry teams, specifically. We give priority of publication to submissions from Army chaplains and chaplain assistants, active and retired, and DA civilians affiliated with the Chaplaincy. Articles whose strongest points are the authors' admiration of their own personal skills and achievements will not be published.

Themes. Many of our upcoming issues will focus on a theme; see previous issues as examples. Manuscripts should focus on a definitive topic; the Editor's Notes page on the inside back cover of previous issues often mentions forthcoming topics. Our Chaplain Branch historian contributes historical pieces for each issue of The Army Chaplaincy. On some occasions, we will publish historical pieces by other authors.

Article guidelines. Average length is 2,000-2,500 words, but all lengths within reason will be considered. All submissions should be typewritten, single-spaced, with no special layout formatting, i.e. columns, text boxes, etc. Electronically submitted items e-mail attachments, floppy disk or compact disc, using Microsoft Word are considered first. Paper copies will be considered, but time constraints for scanning or key stroking may preclude their publication.

All submissions must include: each author's name, postal mailing address and phone number, e-mail address, followed by a short bio sketch a line or two about each author. Be sure to state the current job and unit of assignment (active/Reserve component/civilian position) or last assignment (retired) of each author. Then describe the work you are submitting. E-mail submissions should include all of the above information and include in the subject line "Submission for The Army Chaplaincy." Attach the submission in MS Word format.

Previously unpublished manuscripts are preferred. Please notify us if your submission has been previously published, where and when, and/or if your submission is currently being considered by another publication. We do not have funds budgeted for copyright permission, but we will inquire for no-charge permission if we want to republish.

Photos/illustrations. An important element of most articles is good photos or illustrations. Good digital photos are preferred. Original film photos/negatives can be used and will be returned when duplication is complete. Use of all photos is at the discretion of the editor. Supply names of all persons in the photos and a description of the activity. Include a photo credit. Submission of photos comes with the understanding that The Army Chaplaincy has permission to publish them.
Graphics in which the use of color is significant to readers' understanding cannot be used as the journal's interior pages are in black and white only. Submit graphics, charts, etc. in black and white or in a manner that when converted from color to black and white, the significance is not lost.

Advice. Finalize your submission before sending. Do not submit a revision unless requested to do so. E-mail queries and submissions are welcome. Content and writing style will be primary considerations, but between two similar pieces of quality writing on the same topic, preference will be given to the article that can be submitted electronically. We reserve the right to edit all material prior to publication. We will contact authors regarding any major editing, and we will return any carelessly written manuscripts filled with spelling and/or grammatical errors with the suggestion they be cleaned up and resubmitted for consideration. We may employ format changes for web publication.

Source material. Do not submit work that is not your own. Be prepared to verify sources or quotations. We suggest you include numbered endnotes in lieu of footnotes.
Endnotes: Author (first/last name), title of work (article/book), city, state, publisher, year, page number.
Endnote format sample: L. James Harvey, 701 Sentence Sermons, (Grand Rapids, MI: Kregel Publications, 2000) 41.
Bibliography format:  A bibliography is an alphabetized list of works not specifically referred to in endnotes or used as sources of information for further reading. Author's name (last, first), book title, city, state: publisher, date.
Bibliography format sample: Harvey, L. James, 701 Sentence Sermons, Grand Rapids, MI: Kregel Publications, 2000.

Book reviews. We accept book reviews for publication on recently published books (within 3 years of publication). These can be books you have obtained and read, or they can be books we have sent you upon your request. If we send you a book and you read it and provide a review, you can keep the book. If we send you a book and you do not read it and provide a review, you must return the book for another reviewer.

Book reviews are usually 200-250 words in length. Provide full title of book, author or editor, publisher, date, hardcover or paperback, pages, price. Write a few paragraphs on the book and whether you would recommend it for chaplains/chaplain assistants; e-mail to editor. Include your full name, mailing address, e-mail, phone and where assigned or located. Please check published reviews for format. The number of book reviews in each issue is often limited by space.
