National Population Projections

The Population Projections Program produces projections of the United States resident population by age, sex, race, Hispanic origin and nativity. These projections are based on assumptions about future births, deaths, and international migration. Although alternative series are produced, the preferred, or middle series is most commonly used. The Census Bureau releases new national population projections periodically.

  1. Summary Tables

These tables present the results of the population projections in summary form to facilitate access to the data. Files are available in both ASCII (.txt) and portable document format (.pdf). ASCII files can be viewed using a browser, a word processor, or a spreadsheet, among others. PDF files require specific software from Adobe, Inc.

  2. Detailed Data Files

These files are designed for people interested in obtaining detailed data of the population projections for analysis purposes and can be used in a spreadsheet program or statistical analysis software. The population projections by single year of age, sex, race, and Hispanic origin are available in ASCII (.txt) format and as a formatted table in portable document format (.pdf).

  3. Population Pyramids

The population pyramids are graphic representations of the projected age distribution for the total resident population of the United States by sex for the middle series.
