Database Descriptions
Contains nearly two million reports in print
and nonprint (software, datafiles, databases and videorecordings) format
conveying the results of Defense-sponsored research, development, test
and evaluation (RDT&E) efforts. It includes:
Technical reports
Journal articles
DoD-sponsored patent applications, studies and analysis reports
Open source literature from foreign countries
Conference proceedings,
Reprints
Theses
DTIC® has also acquired Library of Congress
Federal Research Division records that cover a variety of foreign and
domestic subject areas.
Contains descriptions of DoD research that
provide information on technical content, responsible individuals and organizations,
principal investigators and funding sources at the work unit level. Access
to this collection is based on individual access restrictions. The collection
consists of approximately 290,000 active and inactive summaries from 1965
to present.
The database contains over 165,000 descriptions
of R&D projects initiated by DoD contractors but not performed under
contract. Federal statute encourages IR&D by allowing contractors to
claim a portion of their IR&D costs as part of the overhead in cost
plus contracts. By reimbursing these costs, DoD encourages industry
to explore new technologies with potential application to military systems.
IR&D projects are usually performed to improve existing DoD products,
meet dual use demands, or address a whole host of known or potential DoD
requirements. Accessible only to U.S. Government organizations, the information
is used to identify contractors with expertise in areas of interest to DoD
and to avoid DoD duplication of industry R&D efforts.
Include narrative information on Research,
Development, Test, and Evaluation (RDT&E) Programs and Project Elements
within the DoD. The RDDS repository contains data from the military services
and a host of other Defense agencies.
Defense Technology
Transfer Information System (DTTIS) - DTIC maintains DTTIS in cooperation
with the military departments and various defense agencies. As of September
30, 2003, DTTIS contained project information on 5,016 DoD Technology
Transfer (T2) Activities, including 3,062 active Cooperative Research
and Development Agreements (CRADAs) and 220 active Patent License Agreements.
Approximately 100 DoD Technology Transfer professionals are registered
to use the secure DTTIS World Wide Web site to view and analyze T2 data.
2003 input into DTTIS included 476 new records and 406 modifications.
