Question Taken from the September 27, 2004 Daily Press Briefing

Sudanese Claim That Opposition Attempted Coup

Question:   What is our view of the Sudanese Government’s claim that the opposition attempted a coup. Do we see this as a move against the opposition to distract from the situation in Darfur?

Answer:   We have seen reports over the weekend of Government of Sudan authorities arresting alleged opposition group members. We have no basis to speculate on who may have been arrested or what the motives may have been of any participants. Our Embassy reports that conditions are calm in Khartoum today.
