ERS assesses nutrient intake and dietary quality of U.S. consumers, with a focus on certain vulnerable groups--children, elderly, and low-income households. ERS research focuses on specific nutrients and the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), a USDA-created summary measure of overall diet quality, to examine differences in nutrient intake and dietary quality and factors that contribute to those differences.
