New Web Site Commemorates 50 Years of USGS in Menlo Park: During 2004, the USGS is not only celebrating its 125th anniversary, but also the 50th anniversary of USGS facilities in Menlo Park, Calif. To commemorate this milestone, a new USGS Web site highlights 50 years of USGS research in the western states. The site features the history of the USGS in Menlo Park, maps, photos, major accomplishments, memories of senior USGS scientists and retirees, and a listing of special public events. USGS Continues Its 125th Celebration in Missouri

Description: On April 29, 2004, the Mid-continent Mapping center will host an Open House to highlight work being accomplished at the three USGS offices located in Missouri, Mid-continent Mapping Center, Missouri district Office, and Columbia Environmental Research Center. The event will be opened to the public and local schools, with a variety of demonstrations and exhibits geared to the general public. Invited guests include, Rolla Mayor, State Representative and Senator that represent the Rolla area, and congressional Representative Jo Ann Emerson. The Mayor signed a proclamation declaring the last week in April as "USGS in Rolla" day.

Description: On April 15, 2004, the Oklahoma City district office will sponsor "Seminar Day" to celebrate 125 years of USGS and provide updates to cooperators. Project leaders will present seminars, posters, and demonstrations throughout the day on various topics including Surface Water, Water Quality, New Technologies and Data Utility, and Equipment and Demonstration. Eighty individuals from Federal, State, and Local agencies and organizations have been invited.

USGS Open House in Reston, Virginia

Description: For 125 years, the USGS has been providing quality science to the Nation. On October 9, 2004, the USGS in Reston, Va., will open its doors to the local community to explore our science. From earthquakes to water quality to invasive species and mapping of the Earth and other planets, visitors will learn about the science of the USGS and be able to talk to scientists about their work. The doors will be open from 10:00 a..m to 5:00 p.m., with a variety of hands-on demonstrations, exhibits and tours for the public of all ages to enjoy.

Founder's Day -- Reston's 40th Anniversary

Description: On April 17, the USGS along with 500 of Robert E Simon's closest friends joined him in celebrating his 90th birthday and the kick off to Reston's 40th anniversary celebration. The event was held on Lake Anne with local area community groups, schools, businesses and organizations joining in the celebration.

On behalf of Director Chip Groat, Bob Hirsch, Associate Director of Water presented a benchmark to Robert Simon in honor of his 90th birthday.

The USGS had an exhibit highlighting our 125th anniversary celebration directly outside of the Historic Trust Museum. Educational material and the new edition of People, Land and Water, were given to visitors to the event.

In addition, the USGS presented the Reston Historic Trust Museum with a copy of the "July 12, 1974 - Dedication Map" that was produced as part of our building dedication ceremony. This map will compliment the already existing display highlighting the USGS in the Museum.

Virginia State Senator Janet Howell, Congressman Jim Moran, Virginia State Delegate Kenneth Plum, Hunter Mill District Supervisor Catherine Hudgins and Fairfax CountySchool Board -- Hunter Mill District Stuart Gibson were all on hand for the celebration.

Wisconsin

Description: La Crosse Center will be hosting a special open house event this year in conjunction with the USGS 125th and UMESC 45th anniversaries. USGS has been providing quality science for 125 years to the Nation and UMESC has been a federal presence in the La Crosse area for 45 years. This unique blend of special anniversaries dictates a commemorative event be held in their honor. We intend to provide an overview of what USGS does, timelines of USGS and UMESC, and science and non-science activities in- and out-doors for public of all ages to enjoy.
