FCIC Board Makes Organic Protection Available Nationwide
Washington, DC, July 2001 Crop insurance protection for
organically grown crops will be more widely available following a recent
vote by the FCIC Board of Directors. In 2001, coverage was limited to organic
crops with a March 15, 2001, sales closing date. Protection is now available
for all insurable organically grown crops through a written agreement.
The Board also approved the following requests by the Acceptance Insurance
Company to amend its Crop Revenue Coverage (CRC) policies:
- CRC will be available for Nevada irrigated wheat producers for the
2002 crop year.
- Effective for the 2003 crop year, the following changes will be made:
- Missouri winter wheat base and harvest prices will be based on futures
prices at the Chicago Board of Trade instead of the Kansas City Board of
Trade.
- Price factors will be calculated one year in advance.
- The Commodity Exchange Endorsement will be revised to state that if
the futures contract number for a commodity's Harvest Price discovery isn't
met, the CRC Harvest Price will be the CRC Base Price; if a sufficient
number of applicable futures contract for Base Price discovery isn't met,
no CRC coverage will be available for the affected crop.
- A producer who elects an enterprise unit under CRC will have an enterprise
unit from year to year, unless the insured elects to change by the next
year's sales closing date.
Producers who need more information about sales closing dates or their
insurance options should contact a crop insurance agent. A listing of crop
insurance agents is available at local Farm Service Agency offices or at
http://www3.rma.usda.gov/tools/agents/.
