More Dairy Options Training AvailableThe additional 25 counties participating in Round IV of the Dairy Options Pilot Program (DOPP) will bring the final county tally up to the 300 allowable by law. Before the round gets underway, eligible dairy producers will be notified by mail when DOPP training will be available in their county. DOPP training gives eligible producers an opportunity to learn how futures and options markets work and first-hand experience in buying milk put options contracts to ensure a minimum price for their milk. To be eligible for the training, producers must have met a minimum production amount of 100,000 pounds of milk over six consecutive months. After the initial training, producers have 4 months to purchase up to 600,000 pounds of Class III or Class IV milk put options. Through a cost-share program, USDA pays 80 percent of the premium for the milk put options bought as well as a broker fee of $30 per option. Eligible producers unable to attend a formal classroom session can register for an online program that upon successful completion qualifies them to participate in the hands-on training section of the program.
