General Information

Employment Inquiries and Applications

Applicants must apply to a specific VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT NUMBER. Our relatively few vacancies and the rapid changes in the availability of applicants preclude the acknowledgement or retention of applications that are not submitted in response to an announced vacancy. While the Institute of Peace only considers US citizens for direct employment, very highly qualified non-citizens may be engaged through contracts or other procedures to provide services to the Institute. If there is not a specific vacancy announcement posted for which you are qualified, please revisit our web site periodically. Announcements are posted intermittently, and remain open to the receipt of applications until the positions are filled, usually a period of 30 days or more.

USIP vacancies are often identified on lists published by other organizations (e.g. the Foreign Policy Association). These secondary listings often continue to refer to a USIP position long after recruitment has concluded. If you do not see the vacancy below on the USIP website, that absence indicates that we have concluded recruitment and are no longer accepting applications.

Instructions for Submitting Applications by E-Mail

Applications submitted by e-mail should be addressed to: vacancies+######@usip.org Insert the 6-digit vacancy announcement number for the ###### signs. If you have addressed your e-mail correctly, you will receive an acknowledgment promptly, often within a few minutes, indicating that your application has been received. If you apply for more than one position, you must send a separate e-mail to each vacancy announcement number for which you are applying.

Material to Submit for Vacancies

Your application (whether submitted by mail, facsimile, or e-mail) should include: a cover letter that specifically addresses the desired qualifications for the positions; your resume or CV; and a salary history. A complete application will help us to assess the level of your qualifications. Failure to submit a complete package may cause your application to be evaluated at a lower level than other applicants, and may therefore diminish your opportunity for further consideration.

Intern Opportunities

At this time the Institute does not offer opportunities for Interns. Our authorizing legislation precludes the acceptance of services on a donated or volunteered basis, and other considerations have precluded the establishment of a compensated intern program or a qualifying educational program that would fulfill our legal requirements. We hope that some form of an intern program will be available in the future. Please visit this page periodically for future announcements.
