Background
Andrew J. Pierre is professor of European affairs at the Nitze
School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University.
Previously, he was a senior associate of the Carnegie Endowment for
International Peace, where he focused on European politics and
security, and arms proliferation. While at Carnegie, Pierre directed
programs on these topics at the Carnegie Center in Moscow. In
1987-89, he was director-general of the Atlantic Institute for
International Affairs in Paris. In 1969-87, he was senior fellow and
acting director of studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. He
served in London and at the U.S. Department of State during his
tenure as a foreign service officer (1962-64). Pierre has been a
fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation, the Hudson Institute, and NATO.
He is the author or editor of numerous books, including Cascade of
Arms: Managing Conventional Weapons Proliferation, Russia in the
World Arms Trade, and The Global Politics of Arms Sales,
which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Pierre has lectured
widely and taught at Columbia University, where he earned his Ph.D.
in international relations.
