Brigadier General Joseph E. Wesp is command surgeon, Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.
General Wesp was born in New York City, N.Y., in 1924, and graduated from George W. Brackenridge High School in San Antonio, Texas. He attended Texas Agriculture and Mechanical College for three years, then entered Baylor University School of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and graduated with a medical degree in May 1947. He served an internship at The Toledo Hospital, Toledo, Ohio, and completed his residency training there in the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology.
General Wesp was enlisted in the Reserve Corps in March 1942, while an advanced Reserve Officers Training Corps student at Texas A&M; College, and was called to active duty prior to graduation. He was assigned to Fort Knox, Ky., along with a large contingent of advanced ROTC students for the purpose of expediting their military training with an Officer Candidate School course. After completion of basic training he was sent to medical school under the Army Specialized Training Program.
Following his postgraduate specialty training, General Wesp was commissioned a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force Medical Service in October 1950 and was assigned to the 3810th USAF Hospital, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., where he became chief of the Obstetric and Gynecology Service.
In August 1955 General Wesp was assigned as chief of the Obstetric and Gynecology Service, 6208th USAF Hospital at Clark Air Base, Philippine Islands.
He returned to the United States in 1958 for duty as chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, USAF Hospital, Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. Additional duties included chief of Flight Medical Service in 1963, and director, Aerospace Medical Services at Keesler in 1964.
In August 1965 General Wesp moved to the Travis Air Force Base, Calif., USAF Hospital (redesignated David Grant USAF Medical Center) as chairman, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and chairman, Department of Clinics, and was tasked with initiating a residency training program in obstetrics and gynecology. After approval of the residency training program was obtained, he continued to serve as director of the Residency Program, department chairman of obstetrics and gynecology, and as an assistant clinical professor in obstetrics and gynecology at the nearby University of California-Davis Medical School. He was vice commander and director of hospital services at David Grant USAF Medical Center from 1971 to 1973.
General Wesp assumed command of the USAF Medical Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, in July 1973. In addition to his command duties he remained active clinically and was appointed clinical professor, obstetrics and gynecology by the Wright State University College of Medicine. In August 1975, General Wesp was transferred to Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, where he assumed his present position as command surgeon.
He is a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and past president of the Air Force Section of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a founder and past president of the Western Society of Gynecologists and Obstetricians. He is also a member of the American Medical Association, Aerospace Medical Association, Society of Air Force Clinical Surgeons, Society of Air Force Flight Surgeons, Texas Medical Association and Bexar County Medical Society. He is active on committees of national professional associations.
His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with two oak leaf clusters, and the Army Good Conduct Medal. He is a rated senior flight surgeon.
He was promoted to the grade of brigadier general on June 1, 1975, with date of rank May 23, 1975.
