In addition to the Secretary of the Treasury portraits, the Department possesses a diverse collection of original artwork pertaining to the history of the Treasury Building and Department. Like the antique furnishings, the artwork is displayed in restored rooms, public spaces and executive offices. Periodically, small exhibits are organized in the Treasury Building to illustrate particular aspects of Treasury's history and the diversity of the collection.

New Deal Art

A small but significant facet of the Treasury Collection are easel paintings, watercolors, etchings and engravings that were commissioned by the Treasury Department during the New Deal. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau, Jr. (1934-1945) was instrumental in organizing the New Deal art program so it is especially significant that Treasury has retained a number of its original selections. The works date primarily to the mid-1930s and represent both prominent and lesser-known American artists. Significantly, many of the works retain their original frames.
