Contributors' Guide

How to Submit to DTIC

If you are ready to submit documents to DTIC®, just follow the following steps:

Step 1- Submission Forms: For effective cataloging, DTIC requests items be accompanied by the following:

  • Print documents: SF-298 Report Documentation Page

  • Non-print items (Items that can not be printed: e.g., videotapes, CD-ROMs, diskettes, DVDs and magnetic tapes): DTIC Form 530 Non-print Form
  • Form Instructions
    • Need some help filling out DTIC Form 530 or SF-298; having problems using the templates or not quite sure what is required in each field - use these detailed instructions to assist you in correctly completing the form.

Step 2- Distribution Statement: ALL documents submitted must have an appropriate Distribution Statement and reason in accordance with DoD Directive 5230.24 . The Distribution Statement must be clearly marked on either the document or the SF-298.

Step 3- Number of copies: One legible copy of each document is needed. The document does not have to be professionally bound because the bindings will have to be removed in order to process the documents through DTIC's electronic document management system.

Step 4- AD Number Feedback: DTIC assigns an accession (AD) number to each technical report in its TR database. The AD number is used for announcement, retrieval, and request purposes. If you would like to know the AD number assigned to your document, please forward a completed DTIC Form 50 (postcard) along with your submission. To obtain copies of DTIC Form 50, contact the DTIC's Input Support Branch at (703) 767-9087 or DSN 427-9087.

You may also receive the AD number assigned to your document via email by filling out the Contributor Feedback Form. This one-time registration will enable you to receive the AD number as well as other citation information about all future documents that you submit to DTIC. Email notification will be sent to you every two weeks. For additional information about the electronic "Customer Feedback Form", please call DTIC's Technical Reports Acquisitions Team at (703) 767-8040 or DSN 427-8040.

Email:-- For Unclassified-Unlimited Documents Only. DTIC prefers .pdf, .tif, and .ps files; however, other formats will also be accepted. Email unclassified-unlimited files to: -- TR@dtic.mil.

NOTE: DTIC can no longer accept the following file types via email: password protected, zipped or compressed files, file with the extensions: *.vbs, *.cmd, *.exe, *.bat, *.com, *.mp3, *.eml and *.dll.

Electronic Submission: DTIC now has the ability to accept and process documents electronically into the Technical Reports database. DTIC Electronic document submission allows for the transmission of both Unclassified-Unlimited and Unclassified-Limited documents. Documents may be submitted in a wide variety of formats, including: MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Wordperfect, ASCII Text, Rich text and PDF. All DTIC contributors are encouraged to use electronic submission as a means to streamline the document submission process, as well as enhance the output product provided by DTIC.
