Benefits at a Glance

Holidays

The Clinical Center (CC) observes ten legal holidays each year.

Other Features

The NIH campus features fitness facilities and a day-care center. Parking is free but may be scarce at peak times of the day. The campus is easily accessible via the Metro Red Line (Medical Center stop) and Metrobus. The campus shuttle provides convenient transport between NIH facilities.

Health Benefits

The CC offers an excellent health insurance program. Under the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, coverage is offered by a number of carriers. Each carrier provides for individual or family coverage. The CC pays a portion of the premium. No physical examination is required.

Annual Leave

Annual leave is based on length of government service, including creditable military service. For the first 3 years of government service, employees earn 13 days of annual leave each year (4 hours per pay period). Employees with 4 to 15 years of Federal service, earn 20 days of annual leave each year (6 hours per pay period). After 15 years of Federal service, employees earn 26 days of annual leave each year (8 hours per pay period). Part-time employees earn leave on a prorated basis. Most employees can carry two hundred and forty hours (240) of annual leave from one leave year to the next.

Life Insurance

Individuals accepting positions with the Federal government are given an opportunity to select low-cost term life insurance. This coverage is based on annual salary and includes payments for loss of limbs and eyesight in addition to accidental death. There are various options available. No physical examination is required upon initial election.

Sick Leave

Regardless of the length of service, employees earn 13 days of sick leave a year (4 hours per pay period). Part-time employees earn 1 hour of sick for each 20 hours of work. The amount of sick leave that may be accumulated is not limited.

Retirement

The Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) offers excellent benefits financed through a combination of government and employee contributions. FERS includes a Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), similar to 401(K) plans in the private sector. The government contribution to an employee's TSP account includes an automatic contribution of 1% and up to 4% in additional matching funds.

Other Leave

Provisions for paid and/or unpaid leave exist to take care of other absences for such reasons as maternity, military obligations, court attendance, and voting.
