Museum Exhibits

New Exhibits
Two new exhibits are now on view at the Marine Corps Museum to mark the citywide celebration of “America’s Greatest Generation” and the dedication of the World War II Memorial. “Poster Art of WWII” showcases a number of large, colorful posters from the Museum’s collection that dramatize the propaganda war on the home front. Citizens were warned not to gossip, to avoid waste, to produce more and to report suspicious activity as patriotic acts to support the war effort. Now there is a unique opportunity to see both flags that were raised on Mt. Suribachi—the first, smaller one at the Marine Corps Museum and the second, larger one at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in the “So Proudly We Hailed” exhibit. The second flag is usually on display at the Marine Corps Museum, but is on temporary loan until September. Visitors can compare the sizes when they see the small flag. The famous Joe Rosenthal photograph of the flag raising is accompanied by other photographs showing the historic event on Iwo Jima, 23 February 1945.

Researchers

1. The Marine Corps Historical Center is open to researchers Monday through Friday, 0830-1600 (Within normal working hours of 0800-1630).

2. Researchers are official and unofficial. Limited resources require that priorities be set at the section and branch level and in most cases access is a privilege rather than a right.

3. Researchers must sign in with the duty Marine and display a valid security pass. Coats, bags, books and papers will be placed in space provided.

4. Only note paper, cards, and pencils are allowed in the main research room on the third floor. Computers, scanners, or other electronic/mechanical devices can be used if compatible with existing facilities. Staff will authorize reproduction with these or with available contract copiers. Decisions to allowing reproduction will depend upon the impact on the original material (books, documents, photographs will not be damaged or altered). Staff decisions are final. No photograph or map reproduction is available. Classification markings need to be marked out prior to departure from the research room.

5. Reference, archive, and library material will be located, pulled, and delivered by the staff. The total amount of material in use at any one time can be restricted, again to preserve the material and prevent mix-ups. Reference material cannot to be removed or borrowed.

6. Researchers are limited to the research room area on the third floor. The pass is not good elsewhere in the building.

7. No eating, drinking, or smoking is allowed. Researchers are authorized the toilet facilities on the museum deck. Smoking and eating facilities are available outside of Building 58.

8. Bags, clothing, and person are subject to search upon demand. Ensure that personal and research material are not mixed.

9. Prior requests or coordination will insure better service. Unusual circumstances, lack of staff, unexpected or large numbers of researchers will require modification of the above to preserve the collections.
