HHS Awards $4.8 Million to Expand Community-Based HIV/AIDS Care

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced 49 grants totaling $4.8 million to help organizations in rural, underserved and minority communities increase care and services for people living with HIV or at risk of infection.

"The communities where these grant recipients operate have a great need for more HIV/AIDS care," Secretary Thompson said. "Today's grants will help local health care providers expand the primary care services they offer to local residents with HIV/AIDS."

The awards are made under Title III of the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act, which is administered by HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) through its HIV/AIDS Bureau.

Title III capacity development awards help service providers strengthen their organizational infrastructure and enhance their ability to expand HIV primary health care services to more people. Typical CARE Act services include HIV counseling and testing, medical evaluation and outpatient clinical care.

HRSA's HIV/AIDS Bureau administers CARE Act programs. Since fiscal year 2001, the Bush administration has spent more than $7.7 billion in CARE Act funding to help some 530,000 people access vital HIV/AIDS care and services each year. President Bush has requested nearly $2.1 billion in fiscal year 2005 for the CARE Act, an increase of more than $270 million over fiscal year 2001 funds. The list of recipients is below.
