Pharmacy Department Residency Preceptors

 

Reem A. Shalabi, Pharm.D, BCOP

Reem A. Shalabi, Pharm.D, BCOP is the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for the Bone Marrow Transplant group within the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. Dr. Shalabi received her B.S. and Pharm.D degrees from Duquesne University College of Pharmacy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. She then went on to complete a Specialized Residency in Oncology Pharmacy Practice at the National Institutes of Health. Upon completion of her hematology/oncology training, she spent a year as a clinical pharmacy specialist in the Bone Marrow Transplant Department at Shands Hospital where she was also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. Dr. Shalabi returned to the NIH in her current position in August, 2001. Her areas of interest include infections in the immunocompromised host, as well as supportive care issues related to the bone marrow transplant patient.

 

Karim Anton Calis, PharmD, MPH, BCPS, BCNSP, FASHP

Dr. Calis is a clinical specialist in endocrinology and women's health for the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) at the National Institutes of Health. He is also the Coordinator of the NIH Drug Information Service and program director for the specialized residency in drug information practice and pharmacotherapy. Dr. Calis is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Maryland, Associate Clinical Professor at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Clinical Associate Professor at Shenandoah University. He is a clinical investigator in the NIH intramural research program with a primary focus on disorders of the HPA axis, reproductive endocrinology, physiologic hormone replacement, and childhood growth and obesity.

 

Charles E. Daniels, PhD, FASHP

Charles E. Daniels, RPh, PhD, is the Chief of the Pharmacy Department. He received his BS in Pharmacy from the University of Arizona. He earned his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the University of Minnesota. Dr. Daniels completed a Hospital Pharmacy Residency at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda and also completed an American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education Fellowship. He has published over three-dozen scientific and professional articles or book chapters. His research interests include pharmacoeconomics, health related quality-of-life, and epidemiologic evaluation of medication errors.

 

Robert DeChristoforo, MS

Robert DeChristoforo, MS, is the Deputy Chief of the Pharmacy Department and the Chief of the Inpatient Pharmaceutical Care Section. He received his BS in Pharmacy from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences in Boston and earned his Master of Science degree at Northeastern University. Captain DeChristoforo is a Commissioned Officer in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) and he has completed a Hospital Pharmacy Residency at the USPHS Hospital in San Francisco. He has been the recipient of the USPHS Career Achievement Award in Pharmacy and the Hospital Pharmacist of the Year Award from the District of Columbia Society of Hospital Pharmacists (DCSHP). He is a contributing editor for the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy's HIV Update column and has been president of the DCSHP and the DC Metro Area branch of the Commissioned Officers Association. His research interests include oncology, management of HIV infection, and the safe handling of hazardous drugs.

 

Barry Goldspiel, PharmD, BCPS, FASHP

Dr. Goldspiel is Projects Coordinator Pharmacist and Program Director of the Specialized Residency in Oncology Pharmacy Practice. He received his BS in Pharmacy from the Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and a PharmD degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He completed a Specialized Residency in Oncology Pharmacy Practice at the Audie Murphy Veterans Hospital in San Antonio. He has Clinical Assistant Professor appointments in Schools of Pharmacy at Howard University, University of Maryland, Albany University, and Idaho State University. He is Editor of the Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice, the official publication of the International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners. Dr. Goldspiel has served on the Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties Council on Oncology Pharmacy Practice. He has received the United States Public Health Service Clinical Pharmacist of the Year Award and the AMSUS Award in Clinical Pharmacy Excellence. His practice and research interests focus on new anticancer drug development, drug-resistance reversal agents, gene therapy, and pharmacogenomics.

 

Thomas E. Hughes, PharmD

Thomas E. Hughes, Pharm.D., BCOP is the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for Oncology. He received his B.S. in Pharmacy from the University of Montana and his Pharm.D. degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in Philadelphia, PA. He completed an ASHP residency in Hospital Pharmacy Practice at the Seattle VA Medical Center in Seattle, WA and a specialized residency in adult internal medicine / oncology at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond, VA. He is board certified in oncology pharmacy. Prior to joining the NIH in July 2001, Dr. Hughes was the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for Oncology at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in Charlottesville, VA. He has held clinical faculty appointments at the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy and the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy at Shenandoah University

 

Paul F. Jarosinski, PharmD

Paul F. Jarosinski, PharmD, is the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for Pediatric Oncology/AIDS. He received a BS in Biochemistry from the University of Maryland College Park before obtaining his B.S. in Pharmacy and PharmD degrees from Maryland's School of Pharmacy in Baltimore, Maryland. He also completed a Hospital Pharmacy Residency at the United States Public Health Hospital in Boston. Captain Jarosinski is a Commissioned Officer in the United States Public Health Service and has been the recipient of the United States Public Health Service Pharmacist of the Year Award. He holds an appointment as an adjunct Instructor of Pharmacy Practice for the Saint Louis College of Pharmacy. His research interests include pediatric oncology and AIDS and he has co-authored numerous publications in this area.

 

David R. Kohler, PharmD

David R. Kohler, PharmD, is the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for Oncology. He received his BS in Pharmacy from the Temple University School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia. He earned his PharmD degree from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Kohler is a co-investigator in numerous NCI-sponsored clinical trials evaluating new antineoplastic therapies for breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers; lymphomas and leukemias; and HIV-related malignancies. He also participates in phase I and II antineoplastic and antiretroviral drug development trials. Dr. Kohler has presented numerous lectures and authored a variety of scientific abstracts, papers, and review articles.

 

Gerald Overman, PharmD, BCPP

Gerald (Jerry) Overman is the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for Mental Health. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from The University of Arizona and completed 3 years of postdoctoral residency and fellowship training at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He became Board Certified in Psychiatric Pharmacy Practice in 1996. Dr. Overman worked for 5 years as the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Psychiatry/Substance Abuse at The South Texas Veterans Health Care System and Clinical Assistant Professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center and The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy. Prior to joining the NIH, he held a clinical faculty position at The University of Illinois, Departments of Pharmacy Practice and Psychiatry in the areas of Neuropsychiatry and Addiction. His areas of interest include potential pharmacological treatment strategies for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease, the pharmacological management of psychotic, mood and substance use disorders and the deleterious effect of substance use disorders on other major psychiatric disorders (dual diagnosis).

 

Alice K. Pau, PharmD, FASHP

Alice K. Pau, PharmD, is the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Dr. Pau received her BSc in Pharmacy from the University of Houston and her PharmD from University of Michigan. She completed a Clinical Pharmacy Residency at the University of Illinois Hospital. Prior to joining the NIH in January 1997, she was Clinical Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy and Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy in the College of Medicine (Section of Infectious Diseases). Dr. Pau is currently a member of the DHHS Panel on Clinical Practices for Treatment of HIV Infection and the USPHS/IDSA Prevention of Opportunistic Infections Working Group. Her area of practice and research interest is in HIV/AIDS pharmacotherapy.

 

Scott R. Penzak, PharmD

Scott R. Penzak, PharmD, is a pharmacokineticist in the Clinical Pharmacokinetics Research Laboratory. Dr. Penzak received his B.S. in Pharmacy from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI and his PharmD from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. Dr. Penzak completed a two-year fellowship in Infectious Diseases Pharmacology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Prior to joining the NIH in September 2001, Dr. Penzak held an Assistant Professor appointment at Mercer University where he was recipient of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy's (AACP) New Investigator's Research Award. He also received the Rho Chi Faculty Member of the year award for 2000-01. Since joining the NIH, Dr. Penzak received the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists Research Award for 2001-02. Dr. Penzak regularly contributes to the scientific literature. His areas of research interest include drug metabolism and transport of antiretroviral medications with emphasis on drug-drug interactions and pharmacogenomics.

 

Frank Pucino, PharmD, BCPS, FASHP, FDPGEC

Dr. Pucino presently is the Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacy Team Leader and Program Director for the Primary Care Residency. He received a BS in pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island in 1979, and a PharmD degree from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy ∓ Applied Health Sciences in 1984. He was a clinical faculty member at North Dakota State University from 1984 to 1988, during which time he completed a Fellowship in Geriatrics. He is affiliated with various universities. He serves as a member of the NIDDK/NIAMS Clinical Research Subpanels and is a member of the U.S. Pharmacopeia's Rheumatology-Clinical Immunology Expert Committee. Dr. Pucino also serves as Chair for the Pharmaceutical Care Subcommittee of the Pharmacy Professional Advisory Committee of the United States Public Health Service. He has peer-reviewed for various medical/pharmacy associations and journals.
