Second Public Hearing of the Commission on Women, Minorities Scheduled for Oct 6-7 in Bellevue, Wa.

Bellevue Community College in Bellevue, WA., will host the second public hearing of the Congressionally-mandated Commission on the Advancement of Women and Minorities in Science, Engineering and Technology Development. The first hearing was held at the National Science Foundation in July and focused on best practices. The focus of this second hearing is effective strategies to address an urgent economic and social imperative to ensure that U.S. citizens who are members of five targeted groups have full participation at all levels of SET education and in the SET work force. The five groups are African Americans, American Indians, Hispanic Americans, persons with disabilities, and women. These strategies should be national in scope, have significant impact, support systemic change, and be able to be implemented immediately in order to enhance the Nation's economic capacity and growth in this era of global competitiveness.

The commission was established under Public Law 105-255 in response to research findings about the continuing underparticipation into the 1990s of women, minorities and persons with disabilities in science, engineering and technology. The testimony will be incorporated into a report to the President, Congress, and Governors this spring.
