Effects of Oral Vitamin C on Insulin Resistance and Blood Flow in Type 2 Diabetics

Diabetes and Vascular Disease Research Study

Effects of Oral Vitamin C on Insulin Resistance and Blood Flow in Type 2 Diabetics

We are actively recruiting adult-onset (type 2) diabetic patients treated with oral medication and who are between the ages of 18 and 65 years to participate in our research study to see how vitamin C affects the dilation of blood vessels. We will first measure vitamin C levels in the blood and invite those with low levels to participate in two studies performed on two outpatient day visits at the Clinical Center. One study measures how quickly your body responds to insulin to make glucose move into your cells. The other study measures blood flow and how your blood vessels react. In addition, you will be asked to take vitamin C or a placebo twice a day for four weeks. We hope to learn whether vitamin C has any effect on insulin or blood flow in your body.

All patients will remain under the care of their own physician who will receive results of the laboratory and diagnostic tests. There is no cost to you for medical testing. We do not offer diabetic treatment or medication. There is no direct benefit to you for participating, but monetary compensation will be given for the measurement of your vitamin C level and when both study days are completed.
