The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Office of the Biomass Program (OBP) is helping to meet the President's goal of significantly increasing America's use of fuels, chemicals, materials, and power made from domestic biomass on a sustainable basis. To reach this goal, the OBP has two primary objectives:
- To reduce dependence on foreign oil by developing biomass based liquid fuels, and
- To foster the domestic biomass industry.
Mission Statement
The mission of OBP is to partner with U.S. industry to foster research and development on advanced technologies that will transform our abundant biomass resources into clean, affordable, and domestically produced biofuels, biopower, and high-value bioproducts. The results will be economic development, energy supply options, and energy security.
Program activities directly support the overall mission and priorities of DOE/EERE. OBP technology development and implementation activities will directly contribute to the creation of a new bioindustry, and will reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil by supplementing the use of petroleum for fuels and chemicals.
Background
What is now known as the Biomass Program is the combination of several previously separate programs: the Biofuels Program, the Biopower Program, and the biomass-related elements from research formerly sponsored by the Office of Industrial Technologies (OIT).
The current OBP organization emphasizes the technology pathways of thermochemical and sugar/lignin conversion to useful fuels, heat, power and products. In implementing its research, Program relies strongly on competitive solicitations to identify projects that support program goals. Through these solicitations, the program funds teams with representatives from the private sector, national laboratories, and universities.
