Resources for Researchers

This page is intended to provide useful resources for those of you that are actively involved in biomass technology research or who are considering building an integrated biorefinery. If you have suggestions for other resources (ours or other's) that would be useful to post here, please let us know.

  • Biomass Document Database
A relatively comprehensive collection of public documents of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Biomass Program.
  • 2002 Process Design Report for Stover Feedstock: Lignocellulosic Biomass to Ethanol Process Design and Economics Utilizing Co-Current Dilute Acid Prehydrolysis and Enzymatic Hydrolysis for Corn Stover (PDF 5.1 MB) Download Acrobat Reader.
  • Standard Biomass Analytical Procedures
These NREL and analogous ASTM laboratory procedures provide tested and accepted methods for performing analyses commonly used in biofuels research.
  • Biomass Feedstock Composition and Property Database
The Department of Energy has analyzed more than 150 (as of 10/01) samples of potential biofuels feedstocks including corn stover, wheat straw, bagasse, switchgrass and other grasses, and poplars and other fast-growing trees.
  • Feedstock Composition Glossary
This glossary for the Biomass Feedstock Composition and Property Database covers a significant number of terms relevant to biofuels research generally.
  • Thermodynamic Data for Biomass Conversion and Waste Incineration (PDF 11.2 MB)
Heat of combustion and other useful data on a wide range of biomass and nonbiomass materials
  • Theoretical Ethanol Yield Calculator
Have a biomass feedstock in mind? Calculate its theoretical ethanol yield. If you have a potential feedstock for biomass ethanol production and know the percentage of the material that is sugar components, it is relatively easy to calculate the theoretical yield of ethanol from that feedstock.
  • Biomass Program Papers and Poster Sessions
Many Biomass Program papers are copyrighted or never formally published. On this new page, we will try to provide access to whichever of these we can.
  • Bioenergy Conversion Factors: A handy set of energy unit conversions and energy content values for biomass.
  • Useful Information about Conventional and Alternative Fuels and Their Feedstocks (PDF 135 KB).
