We want to hear your stories, comments and suggestions.

We want to hear about events, operations, projects, special personnel or anything else of national interest.


Please take time to review our Writing Stylebook and use it as a guideline in your writing.

 


Stories: Stories should be submitted via email or regular mail. Stories should be timely and include what action occurred, date and location of the action, and names of personnel and units involved. News stories generally will run about 300 words. Feature stories will be about 750 to 1,000 words. All stories will be edited to Coast Guard and Associated Press style guidelines. All stories will be put through a review process and will not necessarily run in Coast Guard magazine. Stories should be accompanied by supporting photographs or artwork. Stories without supporting photos are less likely to be printed in the magazine.

 


Greetings From: Writing should be in friendly, conversational style by someone at the unit. Keep missions and history to a minimum. Give the types and numbers of military billets. Educational information should include the number of local colleges, universities and the name of at least one institution. Also include what types of degree programs available. Housing information should include CG leased/owned if available. Also, give the average price range for housing on the economy and specify the number of bedrooms. Also include the average utilities, etc. Military facilities available -- exchanges, commissaries, health care. Photographs or slides submitted must be a color, postcard looking photo of the unit. It must be horizontal, representative of unit, not an aerial, not the crew in formation. Frequently, the most predominant building is the one photographed. Recreational/cultural information might include tourist attractions, sports facilities, recreation facilities, concert halls, indoor and outdoor activities. Weather and climate information should be included -- seasonal averages, etc. Other information should include the population of the unit's location and distance from the nearest major city. Unit location -- Include a photocopy of an atlas or local map of the state and highlight the unit's location on the map. Credit information should include the name of the author and the name of the photographer.

 


Photographs: Send photos with submissions. Photographs should be sent to the address below in a protected envelope. Photographs should not have staples or paper clips attaching them to story submissions. Photographs should be prints or slides and of good quality (no Polaroids). Photos should show Coast Guard people in action and pertain to the story. Photo information should describe the action taking place in the photo and identify all personnel shown by full name, rank, rate, and/or title. Photos may be used in Coast Guard magazine or other publications without compensation to the photographer or submitter. Photos will be kept by Coast Guard public affairs unless otherwise requested. If you would like your photos returned, please include a self-addressed envelope with your submission.

 


Digital photographs: Digital Photographs should meet specified guidelines and can be E-mailed or sent on 3.5-inch floppy or Zip disk to the address below. Images should be at least 266 DPI at 100% of final print size. Final print size varies. 5X7 images will meet most magazine layout critieria. Images from many smaller digital cameras do not meet this criteria or have a final print size about that of a postage stamp. Scanned images or actual photographs/slides are preferred. If you cannot tell if your image meets the criteria, please contact the magazine staff. Please provide a self addressed disk envelope with Zip disks if you wish to have them returned.
