Syndromic Surveillance: an Applied Approach to Outbreak Detection

What is syndromic surveillance?
The term “syndromic surveillance”applies to surveillance using health-related data that precede diagnosis and signal a sufficient probability of a case or an outbreak to warrant further public health response. Though historically, syndromic surveillance has been utilized in situations where resources are to target investigation of potential cases, its utility for detecting outbreaks associated with bioterrorism is increasingly being explored by public health.

To help provide guidance on syndromic surveillance and its application for outbreak detection, we have gathered the following resources and tools for public health practitioners. Please direct suggestions and comments to framework@cdc.gov.

Syndrome Definitions for Diseases Associated with Critical Bioterrorism-associated Agents is a listing of syndrome groups indicative of the clinical presentations of several critical bioterrorism-associated conditions, their text-based definitions, and corresponding ICD-9-CM codes that can be used in syndromic surveillance programs.	Framework for Evaluating Public Health Surveillance Systems for Early Detection of Outbreaks is a framework to evaluate syndromic surveillance systems for early detection of outbreaks and to provide guidance to communities in defining their needs and priorities for these systems, particularly in response to the threat of terrorism.
An Annotated Bibliography on Syndromic Surveillance is an information resource addressing syndromic surveillance associated with bioterrorism.	The Syndromic Surveillance WebBoard is a communication forum to exchange and share information regarding outbreak detection and syndromic surveillance.
