A Pregnancy Registry is a surveillance study that enrolls pregnant women after they have been taking medicine and before the birth of the baby. Babies born to women taking a particular medicine are compared with babies of women not taking the medicine. Evaluation of a large number of pregnancies is needed to determine the effect of the medicine on the babies.
Pregnancy Registries differ in their enrollment procedures. First you must contact the Pregnancy Registry you are interested in (see list of registries), and the registry contact will explain the enrollment procedure to you. It could be that you need to talk to your health-care provider (doctor, nurse, or pharmacist) because they are required to enroll you. Other Pregnancy Registries allow you to enroll yourself.
Usually participation requires a few interviews during and after your pregnancy. The information collected during these interviews, as well as the fact of your participation, will be kept confidential.
The results of your pregnancy--and that of the other participants in the study--will be analyzed periodically. The Pregnancy Registry contact can tell you whether reports of these analyses are available and how to obtain them.
