FYISE is an occasional update from the Informal Science Education
(ISE) program designed to disseminate information about selected
projects from our portfolio. This issue highlights three projects
related to applied ISE research: a conference exploring the theory
and practice of informal STEM learning; a web site that makes widely
available ISE research papers and evaluation studies; and a book
from a conference about public understanding of scientific research
that includes results from evaluation studies. These awards illustrate
three different approaches for sharing the results of ISE research
with practitioners in science museums, media outlets, community-based
organizations, and many other settings.
Funded in part by the National Science Foundation, Origins, a groundbreaking four-part NOVA miniseries will air on PBS in two parts on September 28 and 29, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET.
Hosted by dynamic astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, the series features new findings on how Earth, life, and the universe began. The four hours, titled Earth is Born, How Life Began, Where are the Aliens? and Back to the Beginning, lead viewers on a cosmic journey to the beginning of time and into the distant reaches of the universe, searching for life's first stirrings and its traces on other worlds.
In the search for answers to the many provocative questions the program raises, Tyson catches up with one of astronomy's most exciting recent findings: the discovery of the first planets outside our own solar system. Detecting more than 100 of these planets over the last few years, astronomers have developed an ingenious technique worthy of Sherlock Holmes for deducing whether or not they might be suitable for life. More information regarding Origins can be found at: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/origins/.
Additionally, Dr. Tyson will be participating in a washingtonpost.com discussion on Wednesday, September 29 at 11 a.m. ET.
