Battle Force Tactical Trainer Operator Course Reaches Fleet

DAHLGREN, Va. (NNS) -- The Center for Surface Combat Systems’ (CSCS) Battle Force Tactical Trainer (BFTT) Operator course was delivered to all CSCS learning sites in September.
To meet the needs of the fleet, the Center for Surface Combat Systems, which is responsible for most of the Navy’s individual surface combat systems training, introduced its BFTT Operator course in November 2003. After conducting pilots throughout most of the year, the final curriculum was received last month and is now being delivered at all CSCS learning sites.
CSCS tasked the Aegis Training and Readiness Center with the development and implementation of a new course to train BFTT operators. CSCS Detachment Wallops Island, Va., took on the task and developed the new three-day BFTT Operator Processor Console (BOPC) Operator course (S-221-4005), which was successfully piloted during the summer at both the CSCS San Diego and Wallops Island detachments.
“BFTT training is provided to the ships by the contractor at the time of the initial equipment installation, but nothing was available to train additional operators once those initial trainees left the ship,” said BOPC Operator Course Supervisor Chief Operations Specialist (SW) Edward Lambert. “The Afloat Training Groups had developed some local courses and we were doing some BFTT training in conjunction with our Training Supervisor Course, but we recognized that there was a need to develop a centralized course that could be taught at the waterfront with everyone using the same basic training materials.”
The BFTT (AN/USQ-T46) training system is an interactive ship and group/force level tactical combat training system designed to provide training that allows fleet personnel to achieve and maintain combat readiness. It also supports joint and allied exercise interoperability, and it provides commanding officers, the Afloat Training Organization, and Battle Group/Battle Force commanders with the ability to conduct coordinated, realistic, high-stress, combat system training.
“In the future, we expect more and more systems to integrate into our shipboard training environment to create a virtual training simulation on board every ship class,” said Acting Officer in Charge Lt. Cmdr. Rex Rolls, CSCS Detachment Wallops Island. “As we move toward this reality, the Center for Surface Combat Systems will continue to take a leading role in developing and providing the individual training required to effectively use these systems.”
