The National Geodetic Survey Participates in Post 2002 Hurricane Season Discussion

On December 17, the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) participated in a post 2002 Hurricane Season discussion at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Offices such as the National Weather Service, the National Hurricane Center, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the Louisiana State Office of Emergency Preparedness came together and talked about the specifications, procedures, and guidelines for State and local governments to meet emergency management needs. The major discussions focused on the aftermath and associated impacts of Tropical Storm Isidore and Hurricane Lili in southern Louisiana and coastal Mississippi. Previously, NGS performed a special Global Positioning System (GPS) survey to determine subsidence values of hurricane evacuation routes. NOAA Releases Study on Subsidence in Louisiana and Mississippi

On April 16, NOAA will participate in a press conference about subsidence. Held in conjunction with the National Hurricane Conference in New Orleans, LA, the conference will release a study showing portions of coastal Louisiana and Mississippi sinking at significant rates, increasing the public's vulnerability to tropical storms and hurricanes.

During the conference, NOAA's National Geodetic Survey (NGS) will also participate in a panel on April 17 on the National Weather Service's Collaborative Forecast Process. The discussion will focus on the coordination that took place between the New Orleans/Baton Rouge NWS forecast office and the emergency management community within the Weather Forecast Office's warning area during the 2002 landfall of tropical cyclones Bertha, Hanna, Isidore, and Lili. For the past several months, NGS has been involved in surveying selected hurricane evacuation routes in Louisiana, confirming analysis that shows significant subsidence in these routes. This effort allows NOAA and the State to identify areas that have a greater vulnerability to flooding and coastal storm impacts. For more information, please contact Nancy Doyle.
