Air Force Aid Society

The Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) is the official charity of the United States Air Force. Its three-pronged charter promotes the Air Force mission by providing worldwide emergency assistance to members and their families, sponsoring educational assistance programs, and offering a variety of base community enhancement programs that impact member/family welfare.

In 2002, total direct assistance to Air Force members and families totaled $24.1 million, including nearly $595,000 to Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve members -- over 34,000 people helped!

AFAS receives no appropriated or non-appropriated funds. Substantial personal contributions made by the active force reinforce strong support for AFAS programs each year. At the base level, commanders, first sergeants, supervisors, AFAS personnel, and Personal Financial Management Programs (PFMP) officials all combine to provide responsive emergency assistance programs.  Then and now... a 60-year tradition of taking care of our own.  Your generous support during the annual Air Force Assistance Fund (AFAS) drive makes these programs possible.

AFAS assistance is active duty oriented. Our top priority is to relieve distress of active duty members to allow them to focus on their jobs. If the military member is deployed, on remote, or in the process of PCS, the spouse will need a Power of Attorney, obtainable through the base legal office, to access Air Force Aid. Society assistance is available on a limited basis for the extended AF community, which includes:

  • Retired Personnel

  • Dependents of deceased AF Personnel

  • ANG/AFR on extended active duty

Grants - are given in a limited amount (to all grades). Grants up to $3,500 may be given to cover necessary costs for a funeral expense of a dependent parent living with the service member. Most active duty members receive SGLI when a spouse or dependent child dies. Air Force Aid provides bridge loan assistance when needed to cover the necessary costs of the funeral until SGLI pays.

Educational grant awards are announced yearly by the National Headquarters of Air Force Aid Society. Dependent sons and daughters of Air Force active duty and retired members, as well as spouses of active duty members, are eligible to compete for $1,500 annual grants. Applications are received at the Air Force Aid Society in December for the following school year.

Interest-Free Loans - or grants may be given in emergency situations relating to food, shelter (rent/mortgage), utilities, living expenses, emergency leave expenses (verified by American Red Cross), moving assistance (PCS), sole vehicle repair, and expensive family member medical or dental procedures.

Give Parents a Break Program - The Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) recognizes that Air Force families are subject to unique stress due to the nature of military life - deployments, remote tours, extended work hours, etc. Families are often separated from spouses as well as extended family members who might otherwise offer support. In an effort to help these families, the AFAS, in cooperation with the Family Support Center (FSC), has agreed to provide funding for childcare under this program. The purpose of this program is to offer eligible parents a few hours break from the stress of parenting. Parents may use this time to suit their personal needs.

Child Care for PCS -You could be eligible for 20 hours of free childcare if you are within 60 days of departure from Hill AFB. New arrivals to the base are also eligible and must use the 20 hours within the first 60 days of their arrival. This childcare will be provided in licensed Family Child Care homes on base and paid for by the Air Force Aid Society.

Angel Award Program - The Angel Award was begun by Eunice Welch, wife of retired General Larry D. Welch, former Air Force Chief of Staff. Mrs. Welch envisioned each Air Force community selecting a very few outstanding volunteers who would be awarded a distinctive pin which would be recognized worldwide. Her goal was to acknowledge volunteers who made a difference in the military community. The Angel Award is a prestigious award that recognizes one’s commitment to volunteerism.
