Effectively
orienting new employees to their work environment and to their positions
is critical to establishing successful, productive working relationships.
Successful orientation is a well-planned and ongoing process that
helps the new employee become a valuable part of the organization.
The time you spend planning for the new employee's first days and
weeks on the job will greatly increase the chance for a successful
start.
To help make
your new employee's transition smooth, you should:
- Make sure
that the assigned workspace is clean and orderly.
- Request
a phone number and e-mail address for new employees.
- Provide
new employees with basic work supplies (pens, pencils, stapler,
notepads, etc.).
- Notify your
staff that a new person will be starting and what the person's
job will be.
- Ask the
other staff members to welcome new employees and encourage their
support.
- Greet new
employees when they arrive or ensure that someone is available
to greet them.
- Introduce
new employees to their coworkers.
- Show new
employees around the facility.
- Provide
the new employees with copies of relevant agency policy statements
and procedures.
- Give new
employees a copy of their position description and performance
standards.
- Answer any
questions new employees might have.
- Find a buddy
for new employees to get them through the first day.
