Plenary Session: "Public/Private Partnerships in Eliminating Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities"

The cost of eliminating racial and ethnic health disparities will be tremendous given the depth and severity of social, environmental, structural, and individual behavior change issues involved with this task. Last year, private sector organizations such as the California Endowment, Ford Foundation, Kaiser Family Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Gates Foundation provided millions in funding to local and other organizations to address pressing health issues. Hundreds of local foundations provided monetary support as well. Yet, how government agencies, private foundations, and other funders work, set priorities, and distribute funds is often a mystery. What roles should organizations providing funding for programs play in eliminating disparities? How do they facilitate and encourage leadership, communication, and action at the local, state, national, and tribal levels? What are the most appropriate ways for communities to access and influence those who determine where funding will focus? What role does the community have in affecting funding priorities, and how do they go about it? Why does it seem that the private sector can be more innovative in its programs than the government? Is it true that the private sector can get funds released faster than the government and that more options exist? Do the governmental and private sectors work at odds? How do public and private efforts complement or detract from success?
