To find reports and data on SAMHSA's Office of Applied Studies (OAS) website:  You can locate reports by topic, specific drug of interest, or OAS data collection system.  You can get highlights, data, answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ) or brief fact sheets.  You can find out what's new, analyze data, and learn about our publication series and data collection systems.  Scroll down and find your item of interest.

 

Topics:  Recent OAS reports have been grouped into various topics, such as adolescents, binge drinking, drug problems, pregnancy, racial and ethnic groups, driving and drug use, treatment,  mental health, violence, workplace, and mortality data.  The data systems in OAS are also listed by name and with their abbreviations, such as Drug and Alcohol Services Information System (DASIS)You can go to directly to each report listed under each topic by clicking on the report title.  To access the Topics web page, click on "Topics" in the header of most OAS web pages. 

 

Drugs:  SAMHSA's OAS provides data on various drugs and drug categories, such as alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, injecting drugs, club drugs, and prescription drugs.  The reports listed for each drug can be accessed directly by clicking on the report title.

What's New:  To keep up with OAS reports as they are released, click on "What's New" on the OAS header.  This web page shows the date of release, lists the most recently released reports first,  provides a direct link to each report.  You can also get to the latest report by clicking on "Latest Data" in the first column on the OAS home page.

 

Highlights:  A brief sentence or two is given for each recent report.  Click on "Highlights" on the OAS header to see what reports have been released, its brief summary, and whether you want to see the full report.  You can go directly to the report by clicking on its title.

 

Facts:  Click on "Facts" on the OAS header to see all the short reports, listed with the most recent releases first.  You can access each report by clicking on its title.  Almost every week, OAS releases a short report on a selected topic, such as:

 

Pubs:  OAS releases its data in a variety of forms including short reports, printed full reports, and web only documents as well as the OAS Publication Series.  Each of SAMHSA's OAS major data collection system has its own series of reports.  Click on "Pubs" on the OAS header to access these various forms of reports.

WEB Only Documents:  Some reports are technical and of interest to a limited audience.  To save time and money, these have not been published and are available only on the web.  These web only documents include detailed tables from OAS substance abuse data systems and other OAS substance abuse reports not available in print.  Click here to get Web Only documents. You can always get to the Web Only Reports by going to the OAS home page (Click on OAS on the OAS header) and clicking on "Web Only Reports" in the first column list of links. 

 

Data:  If you are looking for information by type of data, such as national prevalence of illicit drug use, state-level data on marijuana, and drug related emergency department episodes, then Click on "Data" on the OAS header.

 

FAQ:  Contains Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), such as 

  • "Where can I find information on drug use, drug testing, and other substance abuse issues in the workplace?" 

  • "I am a student with a term paper on drug abuse due tomorrow. Can you give me everything you have on drug abuse?"

  •  "I am a reporter with a deadline in 2 hours. I need statistics from your latest drug abuse report that SAMHSA just released."   

Click on "FAQ" on the OAS header and then click on the topic of interest or scroll down and find the question that is similar to your question.

You can locate substance abuse treatment facilities in any state, with contact information, types of services provided, payment options accepted, and a map.  You can always get to the Treatment Locator by going to the OAS home page (Click on OAS on the OAS header) and clicking on "Treatment Locator" in the first column list of links. 

Mail:  You can email us to request a printed copy of OAS publications, get on the OAS mailing list, or send us comments.  Click on "Mail" on the OAS header and provide the contact information.

OAS Data Systems:   If you are interested in knowing what data collection systems OAS has or if you are interested in a particular data system, such as the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), you can Click here to go to OAS Data Systems.   

  • You can get to the OAS data system several ways.  You can Click on Data on the OAS header.  You can also get to the OAS Data Systems by going to the OAS home page and clicking on "OAS Data Systems" in the first column list of links.   Click on "Office of Applied Studies" or on "OAS" on the OAS header to get to the OAS home page.  

  • If you know the specific major data system you want, go to the OAS home page and click on the major data system abbreviation ("DASIS," "DAWN,"  or "NHSDA") in the first column list of links. The web page for each OAS data system contains a list of the recent reports issued from that data system. 

 

Analyzing Public Use Data Files:  Public use files are archived in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Data Archive (SAMHDA).  OAS established this on-line data analysis system to provide ready access to substance abuse and mental health research data.  To see if the analysis has already been done and the results are on the web,  check topics  or  Go to OAS Data.  If you want to do your own analysis, go to Information For Researchers.
