NIEHS encourages research on the environmental determinants of
human disease in populations which may be particularly susceptible
to such exposures. By understanding the combined effects of exposure,
genetics and age or timing of exposure, researchers supported by
NIEHS are working to reduce the burden of environmentally induced
disease in populations most affected by environmental pollution.
These populations may be defined as populations with unique exposures
(i.e. particular chemicals, high dose) or characteristics which
make them more susceptible to the effects of pollutants (genetic
susceptibility, metabolism, gender differences). Three susceptible
populations in particular are of special interest to the NIEHS,
which encourages research into the effect of environmental exposures
on members of the group. These groups are:
- Women
- Children
- Minority Populations
