David E. Gray is the Acting Assistant Secretary for Policy in the U.S.
Department of Labor. In this capacity he helps manage and execute policy on a
variety of employment, regulatory and legislative issues relating to the
American workforce and economy. Mr. Gray provides advice and counsel to the
Secretary of Labor on an array of labor issues. He works with all agencies in
the Department to fulfill its commitment to workers -- that all workers will
have the opportunity to find and hold jobs under reasonable working conditions
with good wages, health benefits, reliable pensions, and the opportunity to
improve their skills in the 21st Century Workplace.
Prior to coming to the U.S. Department of Labor, Mr. Gray served as
Deputy Staff Director and Counsel to Senator George Voinovich on the U.S.
Senate Subcommittee on Government Management and, before that, as Legislative
Counsel to Senator Fred Thompson. In these capacities, Mr. Gray advised the
Senators on a wide range of policy issues and helped draft and advance
legislation, particularly in the areas of business and education.
A native of Dayton, Ohio, Mr. Gray worked previously in marketing and
operations at Procter and Gamble and Ward Steel Service Co. He was a founding
director of 21CR, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to connecting young professionals
with service opportunities. Most recently, Mr. Gray taught public
administration and consulted on public policy as an adjunct professor at Wright
State University.
Mr. Gray received his Bachelors degree from Yale University, his Master
in Public Administration degree from Harvard and his Juris Doctor degree from
Northwestern University School of Law. He lives in Washington, D.C. with his
wife, Bridget.
