Fatal Briefs

Honor GuardMotor-vehicle crashes take a heavy toll on people and operational readiness. During one recent five-year period, 331 Sailors and 271 Marines died in such crashes. These deaths represented 59 percent of all accidental fatalities during the period--more than twice the number killed in all operational mishaps. Traffic crashes happen with such regularity that we have grown numb to the possibility and consequences. Here are synopses of just some of the tragic losses throughout the Navy and Marine Corps.
