As you may know, I am retiring from the National Science Foundation as of February 21. I am pleased to have served as Director of NSF for the past 5 and 1/2 years.

I commend the work of the AD/SBE Search Committee in helping to identify excellent candidates for the new Assistant Director, Social Behavioral and Economic Sciences. I thank Dr. Nancy Cantor, the committee chair, and all of the members for their hard work.

The Search Committee presented its report on January 12, 2004, and we have been working on the selection of the new Assistant Director. That process and evaluation continue under the direction of Dr. Arden Bement, NSF's new Acting Director.
